ANALYSIS: Bradley Zimmer was at one point from the top 75 to the top 25 on various lead rankings. Now he’s 28, in the middle of his fifth MLB campaign (all 567 AB with Cleveland), and trying to end the year with a .700+ OPS for the first time. In a watershed year for the former first-round draft pick, his recent signs of life are worth putting the confidence behind. Being able to sprint at 30 feet per second opens a lot of doors, but it’s hard to capitalize on the sprint speed of the top 20 MLBs when you can’t get to base, and while hitting base is great, it is much more difficult to contribute specific statistics. categories when you can’t swing for extra basics. Fortunately, Zimmer is slowly but surely correcting these problems.
While he recorded two interceptions and an OBP of .359 through June, his powerful hitting only yielded a .277 shot percentage; but in July 38 AB, Zimmer crushed two yards, stole two sacks in three tries, and cut an improved .237 / .356 / .395. Part of his XBH problem might be the 14.8% drop in flying balls, and his inflated 34.8% shrink rate is doing no one a favor; but he walked to a superb 11.1% clip and maintained his BABIP of 0.397 with a 40% hard hit rate, an average exit speed of 87.5 MPH, while firing slug balls for practice online at a career high of 29.2%. It is never a bad idea to keep an eye out for the different types of power / speed, even if they are a bit more of each other. With Bradley Zimmer reaching base with consistency and leading the batted balls in the right direction, he might be ready to go out and reward those in deeper formats.
