Browns rewarded by kicker Chase McLaughlin via Jets waivers to pressure Cody Parkey at camp


CLEVELAND, Ohio – Chase McLaughlin prepared twice for the Browns last season and now he’s going to see a lot more.

The Browns received the young kicker via waivers from the Jets on Monday, according to the NFL waiver thread.

He will support incumbent Cody Parkey at camp and also help him share the workload. The Browns will make room for him on the 90-man roster once he gets past his physique.

McLaughlin, 25, was scheduled to face the Browns twice last season, once with the Jaguars and once with the Jets. But he was on the COVID-19 roster in the Browns’ 27-25 win over the Jaguars on November 29 and was inactive for the Jets when they beat the Browns 23-16 on December 27 in New Jersey.

The Browns are McLaughlin’s eighth team since he was initially signed by the Bills as an undrafted rookie from Illinois in 2019. He’s also spent time with the Vikings, Chargers 49ers and Colts, though. that he was part of the training team for a few of those stints. .

McLaughlin scored 31 of 32 extra points (96.9%) in his two seasons and 22 of 28 field goals (78.6%). Parkey missed four of his 47 extra point attempts in 2020, but won them 8 for 8 in the playoffs. He also made his three field goal attempts in the two playoff games.

McLaughlin is particularly vulnerable from 40 yards and away, making up just 10 of 16 of them in his two years for 62.5%.

The Browns were happy with Parkey down the home stretch and on kicks of 40 yards or more, where he hit 10 of 11.

In seven seasons, he’s 121 of 143 with field goals (84.6%) and 197 of 209 with extra points (94.3). He’s 8-for-8 on extra points in the playoffs and 6-for-7 on field goals.

The Browns signed Parkey to a one-year contract worth $ 1,212,500 in March, including a signing bonus of $ 137,500.
