Pet adoption fees will be waived at National Adoption Weekend event in SoHo

Best Friends Rescue Center in SoHo is waiving all pet adoption fees for ‘National Adoption Weekend,’ Sept. 16-18, in a bid to tackle the growing shelter crisis Across the country.

A number of New York City shelters and rescue groups are offering reduced or waived fees, including Kitty Kind, Inc., Puppy Kitty NY City Inc, rescue city and Wagtail rescue.

As “Puppy Mill Awareness Day” takes place on Saturday, September 17, the Best Friends event is part of a larger campaign to end the killing of cats and dogs in US shelters by 2025. The No-Kill campaign aims to encourage people to adopt rather than buy their pets.

“There is a growing shelter crisis across the country and the animal welfare community will not sit back and let innocent animals die,” said Julie Castle, CEO of Best Friends Animal Society. “In fact, it’s quite the opposite. We join forces with our extensive network of shelters and rescues across the country to host our third National Adoption Weekend since May to inspire people to come out and adopt.

Best Friends Rescue Centers in Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta, Salt Lake City, Houston, Northwest Arkansas and Kanab, UT are all waiving fees for dogs, cats, kittens and puppies. Adopted pets will be groomed, vaccinated and microchipped for a safe and easy transition to a new home.

Currently, a large number of pets are at risk of being killed in shelters. Factors such as understaffing, limited shelter hours, fewer volunteers, and fewer adoption events contribute to the inability to get pets adopted, leading to their deaths.

“We have evidence that national promotions like the first two adoption weekends we held in May and July are working,” Castle said. “Our July National Adoption Weekend saw nearly 10,000 animals adopted in three days. I’m confident we can beat this, just as I’m confident we can get the country off the hook from here. 2025.”
