Reinstated Waiver Allows California Dental Professionals to Count Certain Registered Conferences as Live CEs

The California Department of Consumer Affairs reinstated a waiver on January 11 that temporarily allows dental professionals in California to count recorded lectures as live continuing education as long as the classes are web-based and allow attendees to interact with the real-time presenter.

The DCA originally issued the waiver titled “Order to Remove Restrictions on Internet Continuing Education for Dental Professionals” in September 2020 as part of Governor Gavin Newsom’s March 2020 State of Emergency proclamation, which allows state agencies and departments to relax restrictions and create additional resources. available as part of the state’s pandemic response. But the lifted restrictions expired on Dec. 31, 2021, under a separate DCA order, as the CDA previously reported.

Now, with the omicron variant causing an increase in new COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in California, mostly among unvaccinated populations, and some counties imposing stricter restrictions and even bans on indoor gatherings, professionals Dental professionals have regained the flexibility to meet CE requirements live through recorded classes with a live component.

The reinstated waiver is effective immediately and currently has no expiration date “but may be modified as circumstances require,” the order says.

CE completion deadlines are approaching for some graduates

Other DCA waivers for dentists and dental professionals are still in effect. individuals whose licenses expired between March 31, 2020 and September 30, 2021 have until January 26 to complete continuing education courses and pass exams to meet their license renewal requirements.

Dental professionals whose license expires in October 2021 have until March 2022 to complete their license renewal requirements.
